Accessibility

Web standards are the term given to the recommendations made by the W3C to ensure the Internet is developed to a high standard. The W3C is the World Wide Web consortium and the governing body for the Internet, the W3C offers a mark up validation service where any html/xhtml and CSS code on a websites page can be checked for errors. Having a valid code makes it easier for screen readers and other devices to interpret websites, making them more accessible to people with disabilities.

In recent years concern has been expressed that the Internet is becoming more and more inaccessible to the disabled community. This is in part due to failures on the part of Web site designers to correctly follow HTML guidelines and an increased wish to use proprietary technologies such as Flash movies and Java without providing accessible alternative versions.

Whilst initial attempts to improve standards by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) through their Web Accessibility Initiative and accompanying guidelines have not proved overly successful. It is beyond doubt that websites are potentially liable under the Disability Discrimination Act.

This website is best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 and higher. It has been extensively tested in browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Apple Safari

All my designs comply with the Web Consortium guidelines (W3C). This is done by creating a text-only version of the website with very limited images except from key products, logos, flash and Java.
